DECK THE HALL WITH BOUGHS OF HOLLY Our evergreen celebration of Christmas in words and music, in association with female acapella choir ‘Five In A Bar’, was an annual fixture from 2000 – 2016, much loved locally and a highlight of the city’s seasonal entertainment. The show played regularly to capacity houses of 120 over three nights each December in the splendid setting of the castle’s neo-gothic Shire Hall, suitably decked with holly!

This fascinating interactive courtroom drama by Michael S. Bennett, examining all the crucial evidence and questioning key witnesses, was given its professional premiere in Spring 2007.

THE TRIAL OF THE PENDLE WITCHES Play developed by Stephen Tomlin, written by castle guide Graham Kemp, produced as a rehearsed reading in 2012 (reprised 2013). Our contribution to mark the 400th anniversary of England’s most infamous witchcraft trial, held at Lancaster Castle in 1612, which resulted in the execution of 10 people for murder by witchcraft.

GHOSTLY TALES Classic narratives by some of the greatest writers of the genre, from MR James, Charles Dickens & R L Stevenson to moderns like Jeanette Winterson, Elizabeth Bowen & Lionel Shriver, read by our actors in the historic settings of shire hall’s historic rooms. A big hit when premiered in 2009 this atmospheric event was very popular in the run up to Halloween. An audience of up to 120, divided into four groups, led separately by the castle guides from one low lit venue to another, experienced intimate readings of the four chilling short stories on offer each year.
